Moorish water well

Moorish water well

In 711, the Arabs came from North Africa and occupied the Algarve and large parts of Portugal. Among other things, they introduced advanced irrigation technology from which the local population was able to benefit. This also applies to the "Nora" (from the Arabic noira) water fountain. Depending on the system, they have large hand wheels to turn the wheel with the buckets or a bevel gear with a long wooden beam on which a donkey, mule or ox had to walk in circles to scoop up the water. The water was then channeled to the fields via a system of canals.
