Bike tour 1 black - 42 km/ 370 meter of ascent
This route takes you through the rural area of the Barrocal, through Moncarapacho, towards the sea and the beach resort of Fuseta. The Barrocal area is renowned for its fruit-bearing trees, typical of the Algarve – almond, olive, carob, pine and fig. Fuseta is a busy fishing port with lots of small colourful boats and a promenade with little cafes and restaurants. Leaving Fuseta behind, you cycle through the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve. You continue on a very well-surfaced cycle path which takes you right through the nature reserve between the lagoon and the railway line. After a short distance you come to the main road which you have to use until you reach Olhão. You then cycle through the town and alongside the harbour. When you leave Olhão, you cycle through beautiful countryside with many citrus groves and other orchards and you return to your hotel, the Pousada de Estoi.
Bike tour 2 green – 40km/ 370 meter of ascent
Today’s tour takes you through the small villages and rural landscape of the Barrocal. Cycling past the extensive recreation area, the ‘Parque das Cidades’, with its impressive football stadium, you reach a railway station. You then cycle through a beautiful pine forest, past a golf course and on to an old, narrow bridge and then a bit further on through an undeveloped area before you reach the upmarket holiday resort of Quinta do Lago. You continue through this lovely park, past very attractive villas and surrounding gardens and on down to the lagoons of the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve. You then cycle in the direction of the airport and through the university town of Gambelas. You soon come to a busy main road part, but just for a short distance. You continue on quiet roads back to Estoi via Patacão, Arneiro and Bela Salema. As you come to Estoi, you will see the Milreu ruins which are well worth a visit.
Bike tour 3 red – 41km/ 360 meter of ascent
Today you visit Faro, the capital of the Algarve. You begin by cycling up to Estoi and then past many large cultivated fields and on through Pechão. Then you will continue and drive into the old town, into the Vila-Adentro, which is enclosed by the old walls. The cathedral forms the central, focal point. There are many interesting things to see in the centre of the old town. Then you cycle to Gambelas and from there you ride through a lovely pine forest as far as Torres. Via the Parque das Cidades to Falfosa and Sta Barbara you cycle back in the direction of Estoi.
Bike tour 4 blue – 37km/ 630 meter of ascent
This route takes you first to the beautiful village of Sta Barbara de Nexe. From there the road goes on upwards through hilly countryside with unspoilt villages and many trees typical of the Algarve. Once you’ve reached the top, you have a great downhill ride back down into the valley and finally a steep climb upwards through the hamlet of Sao Romão, passing the church which occupies a marvellous position. From this high point of the route you continue across a high plateau of unspoilt and unpopulated countryside. You will continue to the centre of Alportel, where you may like to take a break. From here you have a wonderful view over São Bras and the Barrocal right down to the coast. You now find yourself in the midst of the main area of cork production because of the many cork-oak trees that grow in this area. You then cycle through small villages and hamlets up and down through this undulating countryside back to Estoi.
Bike tour 5 purple - 41 km/ 520 meter of ascent
This route takes you on quiet roads through the agricultural region of the Barrocal to the small town of Moncharapacho. From there you first cycle up a gentle gradient and then on a long straight road to the village of Santa Catarina, where there is a modern olive-oil factory with a small museum which is open to visitors. After that you continue straight on for a few kilometres to the hamlet of Bengado, where you begin a long two kilometre ascent. You will cycle through sparsely inhabited and uncultivated landscape with little traffic, mostly just agricultural vehicles. After this you ride along a ridge which affords a lovely view across to the hilly landscape of the Serra. To finish your ride you enjoy a long descent and then a straight stretch of several kilometres back to the Pousada.
Bike tour 6 yellow - 42 km/ 610 meter of ascent
Today you cycle in a westerly direction through small villages and past many orange groves and fields of vegetables, past the extensive recreation area with the football stadium and eventually reaching the famous church of St. Laurence, built in the 15th century. You continue uphill through a very beautiful, wide valley before just skirting the edge of the market town of Loulé. When you leave here, you will be on a narrow winding path to the other side of the valley, past a well-maintained well, from which water is still drawn, a technique brought to the Algarve by the Moors. At the end of the path you will again reach the Loulé bypass. You cycle down this road and it will takes you in the direction of Sta Barbara de Nexe. Then you will drive back to Estoi.
