Description
Would you like to spend your cycling holiday in a sunny area, in the middle of a fascinating landscape and region rich in history?
The ALGARVE - spoiled by the sun and blessed with a beautiful, scenic diversity. A dreamlike coastal area, a hilly, hardly inhabited hinterland, and in between a fertile plain with citrus plantations, vineyards, and natural countryside. On carefully planned routes, you will explore and experience this special part of the Eastern Algarve, starting daily from your hotel.
Itinerary
Arrive and individual transfer (taxi or Uber not included) to hotel. Personalised welcome, briefing on the route and handing over and adjusting the bikes according to your wishes by Algarve Cycling.
This tour takes you through the rural area of the Barrocal. You reach the coast at the seaside resort of Fuseta. The Barrocal region is renowned for its fruit bearing trees. Fuseta is a busy little fishing port with lots of small, colourful boats and a promenade with a number of cafes and restaurants. On leaving Fuseta you cycle through the Ria Formosa nature reserve. You continue on a very pleasant cycle path which takes you right through the nature reserve between the lagoons and the railway line. Here you can watch a great variety of aquatic birds. The sea salt (Salt Production) from this region is highly prized and is extracted from the numerous salt flats in this area.
On the first day, you cycle through plantations of fruit and orchards past the village of Moncarapacho to the seaside resort of Fuseta. During a break at the harbour esplanade, you can watch the fishermen at work in their colourfully painted boats. The tour then continues through the Ria Formosa Nature Park. A lagoon area with sandbanks, islands and water channels, which stretches 40 km to Faro. Large mussel fields and salt basins, from which the famous "Flor de Sal" comes, alternate. You cycle through this area on beautiful cycle paths to Olhão, the largest still active fishing port. There is a large information park about the region right at the entrance to the town. It is worth discovering the old town, with its many small restaurants offering seafood specialities, and the busy harbour before returning to your hotel.
The tour leads around the mountain "San Miguel", which is visible from far away. Through small hamlets and hilly landscapes with vegetation typical of the Algarve, you reach the beautiful town of Santa Catarina. The route continues through a sparsely populated, unspoilt area with little traffic, mostly just farmers' vehicles driving to their fields. Some sections of the path are bordered on both sides by small stone walls, which were once built by the farmers in painstaking work. Here and there you see old Moorish wells, some still in use, some half-ruined, others lovingly restored. Afterwards, you cycle a few kilometres along a hill, with a beautiful view of the hills of the Serra, which rise like a green wall from the valley floor. The tour ends today with a long descent.
Today you visit the capital of the Algarve, Faro. Via rural areas and a cycle path, you reach the old town, which is steeped in history. Surrounded by an old city wall, you will find many renovated buildings from the heyday of the 16th and 18th centuries, such as a cathedral with the bishop's seat, a monastery, and many museums. Through the town gate "Arco da Vila", on which one stork's nest after the other towers, you reach the small marina. Cafés and restaurants invite you to linger here. Out of Faro, through small typical villages, you return to your accommodation on side roads.
Today you will first drive north, into the "cork oak region", to the small town of São Brás, which is located at the beginning of the hilly Serra. There, the world's best cork raw material is harvested and processed in one of the last cork oak factories in the region. In the middle of the town is a large main square with many shops, cafes and restaurants. The small but fine museum of traditional costumes is worth a visit. Afterwards, we take a shot downhill and a long flat stretch to Sta. Catarina. Here there is a cooperative olive oil production, with a small museum, also worth a visit. Afterwards, we return to your hotel through the charming little old town of Moncarapacho.
You drive through the valley of the "Ribeiro de Lourenço", an undeveloped natural river valley with many orange plantations, and reach the sprawling luxury lifestyle resort Quinta do Lago. We continue past beautifully landscaped golf courses and luxurious villas down towards the sea to the Ria Formosa nature reserve and the endless sandy beach lined with dunes. A nature trail through the lagoons takes you to the Ilha do Faro, an island off the coast and the city's beach. Cycle along the airport towards Montenegro and past one of Faro's universities. A short stretch on the national road and then back to your hotel via side roads through Patacão and Conceição.
Individual return journey by taxi or Uber from the hotel to Faro airport.
